Why Your Dash Cam Keeps Turning Off (and How to Fix It)
Your dash cam was working fine yesterday. Today it's off — or it turns on for a minute and shuts down. Or it records but the file is empty when you check.
Here's what's actually happening, why, and how to fix each cause. Almost always something small.
Most common cause: a bad microSD card
The #1 reason dash cams "turn off" isn't the cam — it's the memory card. Cheap or old microSD cards get corrupted from constant loop-recording. When the card can't be written to, most dash cams either lock up or reboot repeatedly.
How to know
Take out the memory card, put it in your computer, and try to browse the files. If you see errors, missing folders, or "the card needs to be formatted" — that's your problem.
How to fix
- Format the card in the dash cam itself (not your computer). Every dash cam has a "Format Card" option in settings.
- If formatting fails, the card is dying. Replace it with a fresh Class 10 U3-rated microSD, at least 32GB, preferably 128GB.
- Never buy the cheapest microSD you can find. Cheap cards lie about their speed and fail within months of constant use.

Second most common: the 12V outlet is loose

Wiggle the dash cam's power plug. If it makes/breaks contact easily, you have a loose fit.
How to fix
- Try a different 12V outlet if your car has one.
- Replace the power cable — sometimes the plug end is deformed.
- If the outlet itself is worn (won't grip any plug tightly), replace the outlet. About $10 in parts.

Summer temperatures inside a parked car reach 130–160°F. Dash cams have thermal cutoff — they shut down at around 150°F to prevent damage. When you get back in the car and it's finally cool, the cam powers back on.
How to know
Cam shuts off during hot days, works fine in the morning and evening. Sometimes the case feels hot to the touch.
How to fix
- Use a windshield sunshade when parked.
- Move the cam a few inches lower on the windshield (out of direct sun near the top).
- Upgrade to a supercapacitor dash cam — supercaps handle 175°F where old lithium-ion batteries die at 140°F.
Parking mode is draining the battery
If your dash cam is hardwired and set to record 24/7, it uses about 0.3 amps continuously. Over a full weekend of your car sitting parked, that adds up — enough to drop your battery below the point where the car will start.
How to fix
- Enable low-voltage cutoff — every good dash cam has this. Set the cutoff at 12.0V (for daily-driver cars) or 12.2V (for cars driven weekly).
- Enable motion detection mode instead of continuous recording. The cam wakes up only when it sees movement, uses far less power.
- If your car sits for weeks at a time, unplug the dash cam entirely when leaving the car for extended periods.
Firmware bugs
Dash cam firmware occasionally has bugs that cause unexpected reboots or shutdowns. Manufacturers release firmware updates to fix these.
How to update
- Check the manufacturer's website for your specific model.
- Download the firmware file to your computer.
- Copy it to the root of a freshly formatted microSD card.
- Insert the card into the dash cam and power it on.

The dash cam is genuinely broken
